Led by Dr. Todd Urton and Dr. Sarah Simpson, our clinic provides specialized ophthalmic care with a focus on precision, compassion, and patient education. Both physicians bring years of experience and a deep commitment to improving the eye health and quality of life of our patients.
Meet The Team
Dr. Todd Urton,
BSc(Hon), MD, FRCSC
Dr. Todd Urton is a comprehensive ophthalmologist, involved in the diagnosis and management of a wide variety of eye disorders, while maintaining a subspecialty interest in uveitis, which refers to the management of inflammatory eye disease. Dr. Urton’s primary surgical interest is the treatment of cataracts. His practice emphasizes a collaborative, patient-centred approach to vision care.
Dr. Urton completed a Honours Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Waterloo, before obtaining his medical degree at the Queen’s University School of Medicine in Kingston. He remained in Kingston to complete his residency in ophthalmology at Queen’s University, developing expertise in the diagnosis, medical, and surgical management of eye disease, becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC). Dr. Urton then completed fellowship training in uveitis at the Ivey Eye Institute at the University of Western Ontario, in London, Ontario, under the supervision of Dr. Philip Hooper and Dr. Rookaya Mather. He then returned to Kingston, where he has been in practice as a member of the Queen’s University Department of Ophthalmology since 2007.
The focus of Dr. Urton’s practice involves the diagnosis and management of a variety of common ophthalmic conditions, including cataract, glaucoma, and diabetes, as well as a range of less common infectious and inflammatory eye disorders, referred to as uveitis. The emphasis of Dr. Urton’s surgical practice is the treatment of cataract. He has performed over 15,000 surgical procedures, with a commitment to safety and precision. Dr. Urton strives to create a surgical plan that meets each patient’s needs by utilizing the latest diagnostic and biometric technologies, with access to a full range of lens implant options.
As an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at Queen’s, Dr. Urton is committed to medical education. He is actively involved in the mentorship and training of medical students and ophthalmology residents, both in the clinic setting and the operating room. He has twice been honoured as the recipient of the Garth Taylor Resident Teaching Award, and has also received the Competency Based Resident Education Award for his contributions to the training of ophthalmology residents at Queen’s. He is also actively involved in research, with publications in peer-reviewed journals, in the areas of cataract surgery and uveitis. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the Canadian Ophthalmologic Society (COS) and the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO).
Amongst Dr. Urton’s roles, he serves as the Operating Room Director for the Queen’s Department of Ophthalmology, advocating for the expansion of access to cataract and subspecialty ophthalmic surgery for the patients of Kingston and the surrounding area.
Outside of Ophthalmology, Dr. Urton enjoys spending time with his family and has several interests involving sports and the outdoors. He is an avid golfer, and spends much of his summer on the water, boating and fishing. In the winter, he enjoys playing hockey, and has represented the Kingston team at the annual Ontario Medical Association charity hockey tournament, known as “Docs On Ice”, for over 20 years.
Dr. Sarah Simpson,
MD, PMEd, FRCS(C)
Dr. Sarah Simpson is a comprehensive ophthalmologist and specialist in oculofacial plastic and reconstructive surgery, based in Kingston, Ontario. With several years of experience in diagnosing and treating a broad spectrum of ocular and periocular disease, Dr. Simpson provides clinical expertise, surgical precision and a compassionate approach to vision health.
A proud graduate of Queen’s University School of Medicine, Dr. Simpson completed her residency in ophthalmology at Queen’s University, where she gained extensive training in medical and surgeon management of eye conditions. She earned her Fellowship with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC) before completing a fellowship in Oculofacial Plastics, Orbit and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Calgary. She then returned to Queen’s University as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology while entering further studies, graduating with a Professional Master of Education degree.
Dr. Simpson’s practice focuses on a wide range of ocular conditions including ocular emergencies, chronic eye diseases, eyelid disorders and surgical intervention for cataract, eyelid, orbit, and tear ducts. She is committed to providing high-quality care that is tailored to each individual’s needs.
Beyond her clinical work, Dr Simpson is actively involved in medical education and mentoring. She serves as a clinical and surgical mentor to medical students and residents through Queen’s University, where she helps train the next generation of ophthalmologists. Her dedication to lifelong learning and teaching reflects her belief in advancing the field of eye care through collaboration, research and innovation. To this end, she is actively involved in research and has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals including The Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology and Journal of American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus.
Dr. Simpson is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Canadian Ophthalmological Society (COS), Canadian Society of Oculoplastic Surgeons (CSOPS), and the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). Through these affiliations she remains current with evolving best practices and innovations in ophthalmology.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Simpson enjoys spending time with family and exploring the natural beauty of Eastern Ontario.
